A Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is a hierarchical representation of the project scope of work, whereby the project is divided into smaller, more manageable components (A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge 2018). The creation of an effective WBS is pivotal to success in the project planning process, as it provides a baseline for future changes, helping to prevent scope creep. It is also crucial in acting as a foundational support framework for other fundamental project management processes including the identification of milestones, budget estimation, project scheduling and risk analysis.
